Your article and it’s “stop showing off” theme made me think of something my pastor does which ironically has, for me, the opposite of it’s intended effect.
Invariably a yearly Sunday message includes a tithing call. He would include an ask to give beyond 10% and include with it a “…my wife and I increased our giving above and beyond by a given percent.” I perceived it as a “do like me” guilting or “look at me” boast. It always unsettled me as a misappropriation of the spotlight about giving.
…when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you…when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” -Matthew 6
“…everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” -Luke 18:14
I appreciated your Stoic focus of leading by example with action vice words.
