This may sound crazy....after reading your post I went back and looked at the painting again. I looked broadly at her face while at the same time keeping perspective on the dual horizons in the context you described.

A saw movement, such as the water moving in the background or her traveling over the water. It was very subtle, like an old-time movie picture using cards flashed rapidly.

Clearly it was only in my mind but it was pretty bazaar.
