This makes the default position that unless we do something (profess and believe in Jesus) we are doomed. In other words, we are born bad and have to become good (in God's eyes).

Wouldn't one think, and hope, that God's default position is we are born good and have to do something bad to deserver condemnation?

It's a dichotomy of action, we have to do something to be considered good (worthy of heaven) rather than do something to be considered bad (condemned to hell).

Personally, I think it's all man and the church's manifestation to serve their own objectives.
