I used to do triathlons, quite enjoyed them but they tend to take over one’s life if inclined to obsessiveness.
One Saturday morning I was out for our usual training ride with the usual group of 10 or so other riders. It was always an intense ride, we were all “into” triathlons. As a result, by the end of the ride we were all spent.
We pull into the YMCA parking lot at the end of our ride. As we’re putting our bikes and gear away (before we head to the pool to continue our training), one of our group is still riding around in the parking lot on his bike, practically doing circles.
“Jeff, what are you doing?”, I say. “Gotta get my 60”, he says.
The 58.6 miles wasn’t enough, had to get the 60 (and log it into his book when he got home).
That mentality still takes me aback.
